Staying Open-Hearted in Crazy-making Times

What Does This Have to Do with the Holiday Spirit? This morning I watched pictures of the city of Aleppo and heard stories of unimaginable cruelty. Last night I enjoyed a special time with family, giving and receiving gifts, putting together a puzzle, watching dog antics, and laughing. In a time of such tragedy and uncertainty, how do we stay open-hearted without dropping deep into the despair so many feel? And what does this have to do with the holiday spirit? My answers always come back to the spiritual journey. When someone close to us dies, we feel the loss. We mourn. Yet, in the midst of the very real pain of mourning, we turn for comfort to family, nature, and the enduring human spirit that, at its best, is rooted in love. During our mourning there are– times of tears and times of laughter; times of regret and times of celebration; times of wanting to leave this world and times of determination to make every moment count. This is also true when the human spirit loses its way. We mourn then as well. What we are experiencing now in the world and in our country may feel like the deep loss of love. Yet, if we become that loss, we add to the depressive spirit that forgets there is also hope. Living in this dichotomy of grief and celebration can feel crazy-making.  We may feel that celebrating is unreal in the midst of that which wrenches the heart. We see and experience so much that shows us a heartless humanity. We may blame, gnash our teeth, feel like victims....

Power and Poise

The dragonfly in this picture came to my friend Peggy and me while we were browsing in a second hand store. It met us outside before we came in and again appeared hanging onto an earring in the jewelry section. Peggy whipped out her phone-camera and took picture after picture. The dragonfly stayed put, allowing us to experience its presence with amazement.       Recently, dragonfly came to me again as I was considering what we have been learning from the chaos in the world. It is apparent that messages about power and empowerment are a big part of what we are receiving. “The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world, symbolizes change and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.” http://www.dragonfly-site.com/meaning-symbolize.html  As we view what is going on in the world, we might question whether we have grown in mental and emotional maturity.  We see people looking for something or someone outside themselves to “save the world.” They are ready to give their power over to others only to be disappointed again and again. Change through Self-Realization If looking outside ourselves for the answers hasn’t worked, that must mean we are to look inside.    Empowered living requires discernment that comes from our inner knowing which then activates deep authentic integrity into action. This different kind of power is part of our inherent essence. Actions are then in alignment with a passion that comes from deep within. We do what is naturally our truth, fully aware...

My Vision: Riding a Horse through the Fog

I am hunkered down over the horse holding it around the neck easily. We are one as we fly through the fog. I look ahead, there is a path, but very shortly the path is lost in the fog. No worries! The horse seems to know the way. There is no hesitation; no fear. Suddenly, I am engulfed by the fog. I can’t find the horse. I don’t see the path. As I stand there confused, I realize I have fallen off the horse. But how do I find it?  How do I get back on the horse?  At first this vision made no sense, but as I stayed with it, I got it. When we are in sync with ourselves; when we are balanced and centered, our soul and body are one. They fly through the fog with certainty. Then, something triggers an old pattern that throws us off the horse. At first, we don’t know we fell. We may muddle around in the fog, trying to find something that makes sense. Eventually, we remember our “tools” to shift the pattern that caused our fall. Then, we can get back on the horse. It occurred to me that as we clear up old ways of thinking, as we forgive ourselves and others, as we shake off beliefs that don’t fit us, we realize immediately when we are out of sync with ourselves. We know we have fallen off the horse. We immediately ask, “What was it that caused me to fall? How can I use my tools to reframe my experience so that I can be one with...

Humility is Who You Are

What do you feel when you hear the word humility? Do you imagine that you pull your energy back so you don’t make too much of a splash? Maybe you heard these words as a child: Don’t be too big for your britches! Who do you think you are? Do you think you are better than someone else? Simmer down! All of this can translate into a message suggesting that you fade into the background. In fact, here’s the definition of humility: “a modest or low view of one’s own importance” Wow! Humility has been presented as a quality to ascribe to. What a way to keep you from being all you can be. You are important!  You do count! Your participation and contribution to life is immensely important! Is your contribution better than someone else’s.  No, each one is different.  Each one is unique.  All are needed in the mosaic of life. Here’s how the Mosaic card from the Luminaries explains this: You are a unique tile in the universal mosaic of being. Claim your beauty even as you allow others to do the same.         How can you claim your unique beauty if your are not standing tall in the frequency of your vibrant energy field? I am here to suggest that we redefine humility!  HUMILITY IS WHO YOU ARE! When you clear away all the overlays of belief that have kept you from being who you truly are, you can step forward with confidence, knowing that your divine nature is love. So when you stand tall as Love, you acknowledge your true self...

Shifting More than Your Mood

As I moved into the new year, I was excited. I could feel great things ahead. Then, I had some down days.  Hey, what is this.  This is a fresh new year. So much is possible!  Why would I be feeling down? Have you experienced that? I had days when I felt a bit disoriented. As the new year dawned, it was like getting used to a new personal vibration. I knew I was grounded, yet I was having trouble finding my feet. I was unsure of my footing and had to be very mindful while moving through a normal day.Initially I wondered if it had to do with an earlier fall, but deep down I knew it was something different. I have found myself dreaming almost every night. Previously,I was rarely aware of my dreams. Patterns of thought as well as emotions seemed to be coming to my attention through the dreams. Sometimes, I saw how much I had shifted my response to life and other times I recognized old patterns I had yet to shift. (It helps all of us to know what others are experiencing during this important time of change.  Please leave comments below about what is happening for you.)   During this time, I  colored the mandalas from our new coloring book, allowing the balance that came through the process to give me an opening for new insight and a shift in my mood. This is such an easy way to experience the power of bringing complementary colors together. It is a meditative opening that invites the colors to help us release old patterns...
